What is Wing Chun
Translated literally, Wing Chun means
"beautiful springtime," or "radiant
springtime." Wing Chun is also called "Wing
Shun" or "Wing Tsun." According to Wing
Chun, there are several ways of defeating the
enemy: striking, kicking, locking,
throwing and disarming.
Wing Chun is different from many of today's
popular styles, such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do,
and Kung Fu. These styles block first and
then attack. The axioms goes the hand that
blocks also hits, ie: Simultaneous attack and defence. Wing Chun emphasizes self-defence,
focusing on methods that allow a block and
an attack in the same movement.
The style is
based on human biomechanics rather than
animal movements, using primarily straight
line, fast, direct strikes and sophisticated
simultaneous blocking and striking
techniques, redirecting the force of an
opponent rather than attempting to meet a
possibly greater force directly.
The way the art produces efficient fighters
in a relatively short amount of time is by
sticking to several core principles. Training
focussing around sticking techniques.
The aim of Wing Chun is to develop physical,
mental and spiritual awareness of which will
develop your overall wellbeing.
Self-awareness, self respect and a mature
approach in dealing with conflict with and without
fighting. Additional benefits are
stress control, discipline and improved
concentration, confidence.
Wing Chun's skills can be developed regardless of
age, sex, muscle, size, etc. It just requires commitment
and desire to succeed.
Understanding Wing Chun
Wing
Chun techniques emphasize practicality and efficiency to
maintain its ideals on effectiveness. Its main aim is to
disrupt the target through striking. Efficiency in Wing
Chun is based on the concept that the shortest distance
between two points is a straight line. Likewise its
primary targets all lie along the "centreline" of one's
opponent.
Wing
Chun uses the least amount of required force in any
fighting situation. It believes properly timed
positioning and movements can and should be used to
defeat an opponent. This is achieved through balance,
body structure and relaxation. As the Chinese saying
goes: "a small amount of force, correctly applied, can
deflect a powerful attack".
Wing
Chun is a direct art which uses deflection and
counter-attack in the same motion. It intercepts the
opponent to divert the attack and rather than blocking
and then attacking in two separate motions. Further on
interception the punch can act as a block and the
position of the arm travelling along its triangular
"power-line" pathway to the opponent's "Core". This
causes the opponent's attack being automatically
deflected by the arm-structure of the Wing Chun
practitioner as the counter-punch is delivered.
Most
Wing Chun attacks take the straightest possible path to
the target to break the opponent's structure. Wing Chun
theory focuses on the opponent's centreline, which is an
imaginary vertical line bisecting the opponent's vitals
i.e. the throat, heart, stomach and groin areas. The
Wing Chun punch is delivered centrally from the
practitioner's chest rather than diagonally from the
shoulders. This helps to teach the centreline concept.
In the later forms, the punch is delivered diagonally
from the shoulder to the centreline.
Wing
Chun teaches practitioners to bridge the gap quickly and
to strike at close range. While the Wing Chun front kick
can be considered a long range technique, it can also be
considered as an "entry technique" - getting past an
opponent's kicks and punches to bring him within range
of Wing Chun's close range repertoire. Theoretically, if
the correct techniques are applied, a shorter person
with a shorter range can defeat a larger person by
getting inside their range and attacking them close to
their body.
